Merseyside's Famous Five - The specialist healthcare capital of the UK
16.12.2010
The Famous Five, who are Alder Hey Children's, Clatterbridge
Centre for Oncology, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Liverpool
Women's and The Walton Centre, offer the highest concentration of
dedicated specialist patient care in the country.
Each is devoted to one area of care and their people and equipment
means they are able to provide breakthrough treatments unavailable
anywhere else in the UK.
In the North West alone, more than forty specialist treatments
have been made available to patients. This includes treatments for
dementia, parkinson's disease, fertility services and heart and
lung disease.
Raj Jain, Chief Executive of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital
said:
"Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is exceptionally proud of its
national reputation for providing state of the art treatment to
people in Merseyside and Cheshire suffering from heart and lung
disease.
"It is a well known fact that heart and lung disease in Merseyside
is a major health problem and our patients regularly tell us that
they are grateful to have our specialist services on their
doorstep.
"Our patients have, once again, rated our hospital as the best
performing hospital in the country for 'overall patient care' which
is testament to our dedicated and highly skilled staff. We aim to
remain at the forefront of cardiothoracic (heart and lung) care so
that we can offer excellent, compassionate and safe care for every
patient, every day.
Kathryn Thomson, Chief Executive of Liverpool Women's said:
"We have a higher proportion of specialist consultants at
Liverpool Women's many of whom have chosen the hospital as their
preferred place to work. Many are also responsible for making
breakthroughs in their expert fields.
"It is also the preferred choice for women across the North West
who know about the hospital's high standards, state of the art
equipment and pioneering treatments which are often unavailable
elsewhere."
Mel Pickup, Chief Executive of The Walton Centre said:
"As the country's only stand alone neurosciences hospital, the
Walton Centre enjoys a national and international reputation for
its treatment of patients with neurological problems.
"We are able to devote all our energies and attention to ensuring
that all our patients, whether they are suffering from complex,
long term neurological diseases like Multiple Sclerosis or Epilepsy
or those who have sustained a major head injury, receive the most
effective treatments available."
Merseyside has a long history of pioneers who have devoted their
lives to making breakthroughs in healthcare from Britain's first
Chief Medical Officer in 1847 right up to the present day where we
are leading the world's research into devic's disease, where the
person's own immune system attacks the optic nerves and spinal
cord."
Louise Shepherd, Chief Executive at Alder Hey said:
"As one of Europe's biggest and busiest children's hospitals, our
primary focus is on delivering the highest standards of care to
children and young people in the North West and beyond. As a top
performing Trust based in Liverpool, we are extremely proud of our
worldwide reputation for innovation and advancements in paediatric
healthcare, while continuously providing the very best care to our
patients and their families.
"We employ the highest quality health professionals who are
attracted from all over the world because of our reputation and our
achievements are testament to their overwhelming commitment and
dedication. The fact we have become 'best in class, best in
country' with the achievement of double excellence in our current
accommodation is a major testament to our staff. Looking ahead to
the future, we are very much looking forward to opening the doors
of our brand new hospital in 2014 which will be an iconic
healthcare facility not just for Merseyside but for the whole of
the UK."
