North Kesteven District Council in Lincolnshire has selected Sandtoft's Old English clay pantiles for the country's first straw council houses. The properties have been built to help cut costs, reduce energy consumption and increase the amount of affordable and environmentally-friendly homes in the region.

Made using 100 per cent green electricity, the Old English Pantile was selected because of its traditional appearance and strong environmental credentials.

Luke Sims, assistant quantity surveyor at North Kesteven District Council said: ""We chose the Old English clay pantile as it is a natural product manufactured locally. The tile also has a BRE green guide rating of A+ and is certified to EN ISO 14001, which contributed towards valuable additional credits under the Code for Sustainable Homes."

Nick Oldridge, sales and marketing director at Sandtoft, added: "We have extensive experience of working with social housing providers and it has been a privilege to work on such a unique project that also reflects our own environmental ethos.

"All tiles in our natural clay range are rated as A+ under the BRE Green Guide and we have taken action to significantly reduce the amount of CO2 generated in the manufacturing, supply and installation of our products. For example, we are the only roof manufacturer to use 100 per cent green electricity to produce roof tiles. This has enabled us to cut our COemissions by 25 per cent per year."

The straw homes, which are located in Waddington, Lincolnshire, cost approximately £20,000 less than a conventional property. The construction and roofing of the properties was carried out by Taylor Pearson Ltd.

The Old English Pantile is available in a choice of three colours and comes with a 60-year Sandtoft guarantee.
