Wienerberger launches two new bricks

PR

Wienerberger, the world's largest brick manufacturer, has launched two new products to expand its sustainable range. The Warnham Yellow Multi and the Bloomsbury Multi are both produced at the Warnham factory, the UK's first brick manufacturing facility to achieve the BES 6001 responsible sourcing accreditation.

Both new products compliment the existing range of Warnham bricks, increasing the choice of colours available from the one factory. The grey and purple tones of the Bloomsbury Multi enhance a portfolio which comprises a series of traditional deep reds and oranges usually associated with Warnham. While the pale yellow of the fine-sanded Yellow Multi is a new move for the factory and has been developed in line with increased customer demand for a locally-produced, durable yellow.

Both bricks come with the added benefit of having a sustainable manufacturing process. The use of locally sourced clay and renewable energy, combined with additional standards in terms of supply chain management and corporate social responsibility, enabled Wienerberger to become the first brick manufacturer in the UK to achieve a BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Certificate for Warnham in 2009.

All bricks manufactured at the Warnham factory in West Sussex are now evaluated under this accreditation. The certification provides independent approval of the bricks and is recognised by the Code for Sustainable Homes, thus making it easier for housebuilders, contractors and architects to specify the products without compromising sustainability.

Mark Morris, sales and marketing director for Wienerberger, said: "These two new products are a fantastic addition to a range which comes with inbuilt sustainability credentials and provide increased choice for specifiers. The subtle new colours are quite a departure for the Warnham factory, which is known for its deep red and orange bricks and are popular across a range of market sectors.

"We are always looking for ways to improve our portfolio and respond to customer requirements and so it is very satisfying to launch two products which meet their needs on two fronts, both aesthetically and by providing a sustainable solution. We are committed to keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum and it is important for those who select our products to know they are choosing responsibly. Following the success of the Warnham accreditation we are now working towards achieving the BES standard at our other manufacturing facilities throughout the UK."

A number of environmental initiatives at the Warnham site were recognised as part of the certification, including the use of 100 per cent renewable electricity and 30 per cent recycled water. The bricks are also made with a significant amount of recycled material content.

Notes to Editors:

With 227 plants in 27 countries, Wienerberger is the world's largest manufacturer of bricks. It is also Europe's second largest manufacturer of clay roof tiles and a market-leader in clay pavers.

Wienerberger has been present in the UK for a number of years and is particularly known for its Terca brand of clay facing bricks.

In 2007, the company acquired Baggeridge Brick in the UK, which significantly increased its range to over 300 products. The further acquisition of roofing specialist, Sandtoft Roof Tiles Ltd in 2008 consolidated its market position as number 3 in the UK and added to the breadth and depth of its extensive product and service offering.

Today, Wienerberger Ltd offers UK customers one of the broadest product portfolios in the business, including clay facing bricks (stock and wire-cut), specialist engineering bricks, domestic and commercial pavers, as well as the Corium cladding system and a full range of clay, concrete and slate roofing products. The latest addition to the UK offering is Ceram-validated Porotherm clay block, a precision engineered structural wall system which is extensively used across mainland Europe.

Wienerberger believes that the use of natural clay products helps to deliver a sustainable environment which is aesthetically attractive and architecturally sympathetic to its surroundings. Worldwide, the company is committed to minimising its environmental footprint and to maximising the long-term sustainability of the built environment and the UK Warnham factory has become the first brick manufacturing facility to be accredited with the responsible sourcing standard BES 6001.
