Arley Homes supports Habitat for Humanity

PR

A dedicated team of construction specialists will be putting their skills to good use for charity - by building themselves a home for the night. Leading North West Housebuilder Arley Homes has pledged its support to the Hope Challenge, laid down by poverty housing charity Habitat for Humanity.

Pitting their wits against property professionals from across the country, the hardy volunteers are set to hike a 20-mile route, with 1,000m ascent, up Kinder Scout in the Peak District, before bedding down in their own makeshift shelter. The construction is one of a series of challenges the teams will undertake during the three-day event (June 11-13) in their bid to be crowned champions.

Craig Ward, Arley Homes' commercial manager, is leading the team. He said: "We're really looking forward to the hike and I'm not too worried about the construction challenge as we've got so many years' combined housebuilding experience under our belts, it should be quite straight forward, even if we are on a mountainside. Each team is allowed to take their own materials for the shelter, so we're borrowing a few pieces from some of Arley's current development projects, and hopefully we'll have enough skills between us to build something to keep us warm and dry !

"What's great about this challenge is that it really brings home the valuable work which Habitat for Humanity does in a bid to eradicate homelessness and poverty housing. As professionals, we pride ourselves on the quality of the houses we build. But it's easy to forget that around the world millions of people live in poverty and endure terrible housing conditions. Hopefully though this challenge we can not only raise some much needed funds for the charity, but also the awareness of its fantastic work.

Craig will be joined in the challenge by Peter Adams, Arley's chief quantity surveyor; Philip Powell, assistant company engineer; Andrew Derbyshire, architectural technician; Andy Ward, site manager at Arley's Atherton development, and Simon Ward, site manager in Coppull.

One of the judges' criteria will be the amount of money the teams can raise prior to the hike. The Arley team is hoping to raise in excess of £3,000 through a series of events this month including a World Cup-style charity football tournament and a gala dinner in Manchester. The 5-a-Side football tournament was held at Select Soccer in Warrington on May 20th where the winning team was awarded the inaugural Arley Homes Charity Shield. The charity evening at the Yang Sing in Manchester is on Thursday, May 27th.
