Dementia Life, a supplier of innovative, interactive technology to people with dementia has been approved as an official supplier to the NHS Personal Health Budgets pilot programme.

Designed by the Universities of St Andrews and Dundee, the CIRCA (Computer Interactive Reminiscence Communication Aid) and LIM (Living in the Moment) systems stimulate conversation by triggering a person's long-term memory function by presenting a range of carefully selected nostalgic media.

The NHS Personal Budget programme gives patients in England the chance to buy specific healthcare services tailored to their own individual needs. The cash payments allow people with long-term medical conditions to have more control over the services they are entitled to and select therapies they feel would most benefit their condition.

As part of this choice and control, NHS patients are now able to access technology previously unavailable to them on the NHS.

Martin Valentine, director of Dementia Life said: "Being appointed as an official supplier for the pilot programme is a great platform for us. Technology can offer ways to augment and supplement human care for people with dementia, having significant impact on their quality of life. The advent of the Personal Health Budgets gives people the choice to explore these opportunities."

The Personal Health Budgets pilot programme will be piloted by 73 PCTs across 66 sites in England.  The pilot programme will run until 2012.
