Ignorance is not a defence warns DWF
4/19/2010DWF is offering Manchester businesses a free review of their current bribery policies following the passing of the Bribery Bill earlier this month.
The Bill introduces the new offence of corporate failure to prevent bribery which means that businesses now have to show they have "adequate processes" in place to prevent bribery, or face possible prosecution along with the individuals responsible for the bribe.
The punishments that can be handed down under the act include handing back all the profit made from a contract won as a result of a bribe, unlimited fines and individuals facing up to 10 years in jail.
Rupert Nevin, partner at DWF, said: "Bribery is a very real danger to UK businesses so it is more important than ever that companies are fully aware of their legal obligations.
"Ignorance is not a defence, so by taking steps now local businesses can make sure that they understand the implications of the new Bill fully to avoid prosecution further down the line.
"Due to its complexities, bribery and corruption law can be a challenging area for businesses to address.
"Our specialists have an in-depth knowledge of the anti-bribery and corruption laws impacting on local businesses and can work with them proactively to help achieve compliance, or reactively to respond to regulatory or law enforcement action."
For more information or to arrange a review contact Rupert Nevin on 0113 261 6049 or email rupert.nevin@dwf.co.uk.
