Duchy's Vision For Cloughton Submitted For Approval

14.04.2011

The application, which has been the subject of ongoing consultation since 2008, details a 'proposed masterplan' for Cloughton which includes: 155 new homes (including affordable units), 4 live/work units, a shop/post office, café, doctor's surgery, pre-school and community space. The 'masterplan' concept also suggests the refocusing of the village around a central community hub/village square, new public open space and allotments, and traffic calming measures along the main road through the centre of the village.

A team of more than 15 expert consultants have worked on the proposals which are intended to improve the long-term sustainability of Cloughton and provide the village with the level of facilities required to service the 'lifetime' needs of existing and future residents.

In a letter to residents hand-delivered this week, Duchy CEO Paul Clarke CVO reiterated The Duchy's belief that this is "a unique opportunity for Cloughton. Our position as the historic owner of a number of sites within the village gives us a rare chance to take a long-term view of the future potential, looking at the 'whole' picture rather than relying upon short-term, speculative piecemeal development proposals."

Mr Clarke went on to acknowledge the debate and strength of views expressed on both sides over the last 3 years, thanking everyone for their contribution and expressing the hope that "the people of Cloughton can make an informed choice on the future of (the) village" as a result of the various consultation activities undertaken.

Expressions of broad support for The Duchy's approach have already been received from Cloughton Parish Council, Cloughton Village Fund and a number of individual residents, 172 of whom submitted a signed petition to the Council in December 2009.

The application will now be considered by planning officers and members of the Planning Committee over the next 16-18 weeks and a decision is expected by the beginning of September 2011.
