WAR OF THE ROSES AT YORKSHIRE PUB

03.08.2011

A South Yorkshire pub has revealed the secret ingredient in its Yorkshire puddings ahead of Yorkshire Day on August 1st.....Lancashire ale!

Chefs at The Old Horns Inn at High Bradfield, Sheffield owned by Lancashire-based brewer Thwaites use Lancaster Bomber in the batter mix for classic Yorkshire Puddings and fish dishes.

The Old Horns was recently named Pub of the Year and also scooped the top food pub accolade at the Thwaites Awards for Excellence 2011.

The pub is run by John Wyke with a team of 15 staff.  John runs the pub on a day to day basis with partner Cassie Hirst.

Licensee John said: "We're a busy food pub and on an average week sell at least 800 Yorkshire puddings, the vast majority going on a Sunday with our carvery lunches. Quality is extremely important and we've found that nothing gets a better rise for our Yorkshire puddings than a splash of Thwaites Lancaster Bomber ale.

"Our chefs also use it for our fish and it is the key ingredient in our famous, signature dish, the Dambuster Pie which is our top selling dish on the menu. The full bodied flavour of Lancaster Bomber really enhances the taste of the puddings and gives them a real meaty lift which our customers love."

John took over the pub where he had once worked and knew well - he's local and from Loxley - in late 2009. He's already got the Blueball Inn at Wharncliffe Side and Peacock at Stannington with his brother Ben so when the chance came to lease the pub from Thwaites he leapt at it. There are over 350 pubs in Lancashire-based brewer Daniel Thwaites' estate.

The Old Horns is now delivering 300 covers a day and gets through 35 sacks of potatoes a week. John sources all of his food locally and even takes delivery of fresh cod and haddock from Grimsby three times a week.

Added John: "This is a great pub to come and celebrate Yorkshire Day with our spectacular views of the Bradfield Valley. Our chefs will continue to fuel our Yorkshire puddings with
Lancaster Bomber as the taste scores a direct hit with our customers!"
