A TRIP TO WASHINGTON AWAITS WINNING SCHOOL TEAM IN LIVERPOOL'S GREAT ENTERPRISE CHALLENGE
31.10.2011
EVERY school pupil in Liverpool is being given the
opportunity to win a trip to Washington by unleashing their ideas
in a unique city wide enterprise competition.
It's the last chance for schools to apply to take part in
Liverpool's Great Enterprise Challenge, with just seven days before
the closing date for entries (Friday, November 4).
The initiative was successfully launched earlier this
month with hundreds of schoolchildren attending an event at the BT
Convention Centre.
Liverpool City Council, in partnership with Liverpool
Vision, is the first local authority in the UK to launch such a
challenge, with a start up fund of £100 available to all 170 of the
city's schools.
The competition is part of the build up to next year's
Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC), where entrepreneurs and
thought leaders from more than 120 countries will be represented.
The Congress is being organised by the US-based Kauffman Foundation
and Liverpool Vision.
Cllr Gary Millar, Liverpool City Council's assistant
cabinet member to the leader came up with idea for the Challenge
and said:
"There's a sense of great excitement about this project
from teachers and pupils across the city who are already picking up
the gauntlet of our great enterprise challenge. It's a chance for
them to widen their horizons, put their school on the map and of
course win the incredible opportunity to visit Washington where I
am sure they will be wonderful ambassadors for our city and the
creativity here.
"The competition also provides an important part of the
legacy for the city with all profits and surplus funds at the end
of the competition being reinvested into future enterprise in
education activity."
Max Steinberg, chief executive of Liverpool Vision said:
"We've already had a fantastic response to the competition
with some really creative ideas coming from the schools. The trip
to Washington is the top prize for one lucky team of six, but there
are a number of prizes on offer.
"We know the city is full of entrepreneurial talent and we
are looking forward to showcasing some of the ideas during next
month's Global Entrepreneurship Week, when this competition reaches
its second stage."
Global Entrepreneurship Week takes place from the
14th-20th November and the top 20 teams will
receive more money from a Dragons' Den style panel.
Other prizes include a learning day called Keep the Cash!
from Ambitious Minds who will be giving the winning students the
experience of what it will be like when they have to make their own
financial decisions as independent adults.
